Gaza is the largest Palestinian City in terms of population (with more than 400 000 inh.). It is also one of the oldest cities in the Holy Land (Palestine Area) with a history going far back to 1500 B.C and even further. Ancient Gaza was a prosperous trade centre and a stop on the caravan route between Egypt and Syria. Gaza is the site where Prophet Mohammed's grandfather (Hashem) was buried, and this is why it is widely known in the Arabic and Islamic World as Hashem’s Gaza. Today, Gaza is the main urban settlement of Gaza Strip.
