Location and Nature
Dresden is the capital city of the Free State of Saxony in Germany. It is situated in a marked widening of the Elbe valley near the Czech border. The Dresden Elbe Valley is a former world heritage site which is focused on the conservation of the cultural landscape in Dresden. One important part of that landscape is the Elbe meadows which cross the city, 20 kilometres long. The foothills of the Eastern Erzgebirge Mountains, the Lusatian Granite Uplands and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains characterise the surroundings of the Saxon capital.
"The Elbflorenz"
Dresden is often called "Elbflorenz", initially concerning its art collections but also because of its Baroque-style architecture and the pleasant location on the Elbe. The blend of attractive architecture, internationally famous museums and lively tradition in music and fine arts, shape Dresden's cultural life today.
Dresden has a long history as home for many Saxon princes and kings, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour.
It was completely destroyed after the Allied aerial bombing in World War II, but enormous restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Semperoper and the Dresdner Frauenkirche. Since the German reunification in 1990, Dresden has reemerged as a cultural, educational, political and economic centre of Germany.
Science and Education
In Dresden science and education are very important for economy (nickname: silicon valley) and also environmental development of the city. Dresden has a Technical Univesity and also a University of applied sciences. Many students live in the city and join the nightlife.
